How to Test:
- Enter Tarix API key in settings
- Click “Test Connection” button
- Review result message
Successful Test:
- Message: “Connection successful”
- Status: Green checkmark
- API key is valid and service is accessible
Failed Test:
- Error message displays reason for failure
- Common issues:
- Invalid API key
- Expired subscription
- Network connectivity issue
- Tarix service downtime
Best Practice: Test connection after initial setup and periodically to ensure integration remains functional.
How Tarix Works in Borderbolt
HS Code Lookup Workflow
- User creates declaration line with product description
- User clicks “Lookup HS Code” button (Tarix icon)
- Borderbolt sends request to Tarix API with:
- Product description
- Optional: Origin country
- Optional: Material composition
- Tarix analyzes description using AI and expert rules
- Tarix returns suggested HS code(s) with confidence scores
- User reviews suggestions and selects appropriate code
- HS code is populated in declaration line
- Result is cached for future lookups of same product
Where Tarix is Available
Tarix lookup is available in:
- Declaration Line Entry: When adding/editing lines on declarations
- Item Master: When creating/updating item master records
- AI Import Workbench: When reviewing AI-extracted drafts
- File Import Mapping: When mapping fields during bulk import
Example Lookup
Input:
Product Description: "Men's cotton jeans, blue, size 32"
Origin Country: BangladeshTarix Response:
Suggested HS Codes:
1. 6203.42.31 - Men's cotton trousers (95% confidence)
2. 6203.42.90 - Other cotton trousers (70% confidence)
3. 6104.63.00 - Women's cotton trousers (20% confidence)User Action: Select 6203.42.31 → HS code populated in declaration line.
Tarix API Limits and Pricing
API Usage
Tarix typically charges based on:
- API calls per month: Each lookup counts as one call
- Plan tiers: Different pricing for volume levels
- Additional features: Priority support, bulk classification, etc.
Best Practice: Monitor API usage to stay within plan limits. Use caching to reduce duplicate lookups.
Caching
Borderbolt caches Tarix results to minimize API calls:
- Cache key: Product description + origin country
- Cache duration: 90 days (configurable)
- Exact match required for cache hit
Example:
- First lookup: “Men’s cotton jeans” → API call to Tarix
- Second lookup: “Men’s cotton jeans” → Cached result (no API call)
- Different description: “Men’s denim jeans” → New API call
Best Practices
Product Descriptions
For accurate HS code classification, provide detailed product descriptions including:
Essential Details:
- Product type (e.g., trousers, jacket, electronics)
- Material composition (e.g., 100% cotton, polyester blend)
- Function or use (e.g., protective, decorative, industrial)
- Specific characteristics (e.g., waterproof, insulated)
Good Description Examples:
- ✅ “Men’s waterproof jacket, 100% polyester, insulated, for outdoor use”
- ✅ “Wireless Bluetooth headphones, over-ear, noise-canceling, plastic housing”
- ✅ “Ceramic dinner plates, porcelain, 27cm diameter, decorative floral pattern”
Poor Description Examples:
- ❌ “Jacket” (too vague)
- ❌ “Electronics” (not specific)
- ❌ “Item 12345” (no description)
When to Use Tarix
Use Tarix For:
- Unfamiliar products
- Complex or technical items
- Products with ambiguous classification
- New product lines
- Verification of uncertain HS codes
Manual Entry For:
- Well-known, frequently imported products
- Items with established HS codes in item master
- Simple, unambiguous products (e.g., basic office supplies)
- When Tarix suggests multiple codes with low confidence
Item Master Integration
Recommended Workflow:
- Use Tarix to classify new products
- Save HS code to item master record
- Reuse HS code from item master on future declarations
- No need to lookup same product repeatedly
Benefits:
- Reduces API usage
- Ensures consistency across declarations
- Faster declaration entry
- Lower classification errors
Verification
Always Verify:
- Tarix suggestions are guidance, not guarantees
- User is responsible for final HS code accuracy
- Consult customs experts for high-value or complex goods
- Review confidence scores (prefer >90% confidence)
- Check official customs tariff databases when uncertain
Compliance Note: While Tarix provides expert-validated suggestions, the declarant is ultimately responsible for correct HS code classification. Always verify classifications for high-risk or high-value shipments.
Updating Settings
- Navigate to Settings → Tarix
- Toggle “Tarix Enabled” on
- Enter Tarix API key

Troubleshooting
Test Connection Fails
Problem: “Test Connection” button returns error.
Solutions:
- Verify API key is copied correctly (no extra spaces)
- Check Tarix subscription is active
- Ensure Tarix service is not down (check status page)
- Verify network connectivity (firewall not blocking HTTPS to Tarix)
- Regenerate API key in Tarix dashboard and try again
- Contact Tarix support if issue persists
No Suggestions Returned
Problem: Lookup succeeds but Tarix returns no HS code suggestions.
Solutions:
- Product description too vague (add more detail)
- Product type not recognized (try different wording)
- Unusual or highly specialized product (manual classification needed)
- Check Tarix dashboard for lookup history and errors
- Consult customs expert for manual classification
Low Confidence Scores
Problem: Tarix returns suggestions but all have low confidence (<70%).
Solutions:
- Improve product description with more detail
- Add material composition
- Specify intended use or function
- Check for typos in description
- Consider manual classification
- Consult official customs tariff database
API Rate Limiting
Problem: Lookups fail with rate limit errors.
Solutions:
- Monitor API usage in Tarix dashboard
- Upgrade Tarix plan for higher limits
- Use item master to cache HS codes for repeat products
- Batch classify products during setup, not during live declarations
- Contact Tarix to discuss usage needs
Incorrect HS Code Suggestions
Problem: Tarix suggests HS code that doesn’t match product.
Solutions:
- Review product description for ambiguity
- Verify material composition is correct
- Check if product has multiple possible classifications
- Use official customs tariff database to verify
- Report issue to Tarix support with example
- Manually enter correct HS code and save to item master
Cached Results Outdated
Problem: HS code regulations changed but cached result is old.
Solutions:
- Clear specific cache entry (developer/admin function)
- Wait for cache expiration (90 days)
- Manually update HS code in item master
- Re-run lookup with slightly different description to bypass cache
- Contact system administrator to clear all Tarix caches if major regulation change
